Neymar & Mbappe make Weah ‘hungrier’ for success

first_imgTimothy Weah admits competition from the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe makes him “hungrier” to be a success at Paris Saint-Germain and during a loan spell at Celtic. The 18-year-old United States international has linked up with the Scottish champions on a deal through to the end of the season .He has already made a positive impression at Parkhead, netting on his debut against Airdrie and again during a midweek meeting with St Mirren . Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Weah is aware that he needs to maintain those standards, both in Scotland and France, with there a desire on his part to emulate the achievements of superstar team-mates at Parc des Princes. He told PA Sport : “Obviously at PSG they have the best players in the world.“Being with that group has really made me strong. I have watched the ins and outs of everyone, Neymar and Mbappe and all those guys in training and I really feel that it has moulded me into a stronger person and a fighter and it made me a lot hungrier than before.“I don’t see it as being much different [at Celtic], we are human beings and we are all fighting for the spot and everyone has that hunger and once you have that hunger you can do what you need to do.“The competition here is great, Sinky [Scott Sinclair] and James Forrest are top-class players and getting the chance to compete with them and train with them every day is going to make me a better player.”Tim Weah USMNT 05282018Weah, who is the son of former World Player of the Year George, admits he did not know what to expect when leaving Paris for Glasgow. He is an ambitious performer with considerable potential, though, and is delighted to be showing what he can do outside of his comfort zone.“I was really scared coming to Celtic because I have heard so much about UK football being tough, the fans expect so much,” Weah added.“I was always confident that I would get the hang of things but being young and inexperienced, you come here and there is a lot of expectation and I have to get going because the fans expect so much, coming from PSG and with the name that I have.“The debut goal was awesome and I just want to score more goals for the fans and continue to help my team. Haiti v. Everybody: Grenadiers into semis after historic rally

first_imgHaiti’s players left NRG Stadium in a jubilant mood Saturday night after scoring three second-half goals to top Canada 3-2 and move into the Gold Cup semifinals. In addition to a ticket to the final four of the Concacaf tournament for the first time in history, one even acquired a souvenir, a snapback tossed from the crowd onto the field that he was still wearing as he exited. It read, “Haiti vs. Everybody.” Plenty of cities and nations have used the same sort of motto, but it’s been true for Les Grenadiers during the tournament. They’ve taken on all comers and, despite falling behind in three of four matches in the tournament, they’ve come out on top.  Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare “It feels amazing. I have to tell you, we’re a group of fighters,” Steeven Saba told Goal after the game. “Every time you get a win like this, you get more excited. You get momentum going. Coming down 2-0 at the half, just like we were losing in the group stage, it always feels amazing.” Hait went into the break trailing by two goals after a first half Canada controlled. The Haitians fell asleep on the first goal, with Alphonso Davies quickly taking a free kick and finding Jonathan David all alone. The Gold Cup’s leading scorer made no mistake and smashed the opener past Haiti goalkeeper Jhony Placide. On the second, Scott Arfield put a pass in for Lucas Cavallini, who was one-on-one with Placide after being kept onside by the left back Alex Christian. Surely something was said in the locker room at the break that inspired a Haiti team to come out and score three times in the second half, especially one good enough to inspire the winner – a goal from Wilde-Donald Guerrier from a gorgeous move started by Saba when he won back the ball in his own half and sent a rainbow toward Duckens Nazon. Nazon turned and got down the line, then he decided to see what his options were in the middle. It didn’t appear he had many choices, but he pulled a pass out of nowhere that found Guerrier. His first touch wasn’t a good one, but he stayed with it, popped the ball back in the air and finished past Milan Borjan. Borjan had been beaten almost by his own man for the first goal, with a back pass from Marcus Godinho catching him by surprise and allowing Nazon to pick his pocket and start the rally. Herve Bazile had the second from the penalty spot. ¡¡GOOOOOOLAAAAAZOOOOOO-AAAAZOOOOOO-AZOOOOOOO!! If we were more serious in the second half, we could be more difficult for them. We came back. That’s when Canada started to doubt.” That wasn’t quite accurate, though. In each of the matches when Haiti was down, a veteran player has stood to rally his teammate and inspire them to chase the game in the second half and come away with the result. For this match, center back Andrew Jean-Baptiste stood. “It takes one voice in the locker room to lift everyone up. First game was Nazon, second game was Herve, this game was me,” he said. “I’m all about positive mentality, and that’s of one of the things I’m enforcing – I’m like, ‘yo, levez la tête – lift your head – we’re not finished. We have 45 minutes to change the game and all it takes is just one goal and we can create history after that.’ Miraculously, that’s exactly what happened.”Alphonso Davies Canada Haiti Gold Cup 2019Baptiste’s speech was so moving for the players, Saba didn’t dare imitate it, instead calling over the Sweden-based defender they call “Drew” to recreate the moment. “I pointed out that this may be a few guys’ last Gold Cup and I said I’m going to go out there and give every single thing that I can possibly give and I want my brothers to follow with me,” Baptiste said. “We all do it together because our fitness coach put “Team” on the board. “I just kept on reiterating that we have to do this together. If we’re going to lose this game, let’s lose this game giving every single little bit that we have. That’s exactly what these guys did. We clawed and fought for it.” They did the same after trailing Bermuda at the half. They did the same after trailing Costa Rica at the half. Now Haiti is in to the Gold Cup semifinal for the first time, where they’ll wait for the winner of Mexico vs. Costa Rica, taking on all comers once again.last_img read more

Here’s Where ESPN Ranks Clemson’s ‘Future Offense’

first_imgtrevor lawrence celebrates during the national title gameSANTA CLARA, CA – JANUARY 07: Trevor Lawrence #16 of the Clemson Tigers celebrates his seventy-four yard touchdown throw during the third quarter against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the CFP National Championship presented by AT&T at Levi’s Stadium on January 7, 2019 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)Over the past few years, the Clemson Tigers have produced a plethora of great prospects on the defensive side of the football. While that trend isn’t slowing down at all, it’s time to divert some of that attention toward the offense.Last season, the Tigers won the College Football Playoff behind the marvelous play of Trevor Lawrence. The freshman quarterback is on track to be a first-round pick in the future, which means more experience at Clemson should help his development. In addition to Clemson having Lawrence for this upcoming season, the defending champions will also have Travis Etienne, Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross. Let’s not forget that Dabo Swinney is still coaching this powerhouse program. With the college football season approaching soon enough, ESPN writer Adam Rittenberg ranked the top “future offenses” in the country. After ranking Clemson as the No. 2 future offense last year, Rittenberg has bumped them up to the top spot, thanks to the plethora of talent on the team now, and that Swinney has coming in over the next few years. From ESPN:This was a fairly easy choice, mainly because Trevor Lawrence will lead the unit for two more seasons. Clemson has also established itself as the nation’s premier wide receiver program, and while the legendary Hunter Renfrow departs, standouts such as Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross are back. The Tigers get 1,600-yard rusher Travis Etienne for at least one more season, and Lyn-J Dixon is only a sophomore. Offensive line recruitment and development has steadily improved at Clemson, which loses standout tackle Mitch Hyatt but should be in good shape. Clemson’s overall recruiting on offense is virtually unmatched nationally. It makes sense that Clemson is first in these rankings, especially with its offensive stars back in the fold. The full rankings from Rittenberg can be viewed with an ESPN+ subscription.[ESPN]last_img read more

ESPN Names Notre Dame’s “Best Football Tradition”

first_img Even newer traditions have a way of feeling timeless on Saturdays in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame didn’t install its “Play Like A Champion Today” sign in the current location at the exit of its locker room until 1986, but it has since become an iconic pregame image to see the Irish tapping the blue-and-gold placard on their way to the field. — [Dan] MurphyThe tradition started during the Lou Holtz era, and within two years of its introduction, the team won the national championship after beating West Virignia in the Fiesta Bowl.Nowadays, the television broadcast at Notre Dame games will almost always show the players coming out of the locker room, slapping the famous sign before a game.We should expect to see it happen many more times in the years to come.[ESPN] A closeup of a notre dame player's helmet.SOUTH BEND, IN – OCTOBER 07: A member of Notre Dame Fighting Irish holds up his helmet on the opening kickoff during the game against the Stanford Cardinal on October 7, 2006 at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. Naturally, the football team has as well. From their rivalries with USC and Navy to the Leprechaun mascot to the use of real gold flakes in their helmets, the Fighting Irish are not lacking for traditions. On Friday, ESPN revealed its ranking of “the best football tradition for each Top 25 team.” With the No. 6 ranking in the country, Notre Dame’s “Best Football Tradition” was explored as well. While the band playing the 1812 Overture after the third quarter and the Alma Mater after the game stood are good, ESPN selected the slapping of the “Play Like a Champion Today” sign coming out of the locker room – even though the tradition has only existed since the mid-1980s.last_img read more

It’s Officially Panic Time For Jim Harbaugh At Michigan

first_imgJim Harbaugh on the sideline at Wisconsin.MADISON, WISCONSIN – SEPTEMBER 21: Head coach Jim Harbaugh of the Michigan Wolverines watches action prior to a game against the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium on September 21, 2019 in Madison, Wisconsin. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)It’s officially panic time for Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines following today’s brutal loss at Wisconsin. The Wolverines came into the 2019 season with Big Ten championship hopes. ESPN’s Football Power Index named Michigan the favorite in the league. Several pundits predicted Harbaugh’s team to win the Big Ten and make the College Football Playoff. Now, technically, that could still happen. But anyone who predicted Michigan to do anything of substance on a national level this year is looking very, very wrong.Michigan fell to Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium, 35-14, in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score. The Wolverines trailed the Badgers, 28-0, at halftime and were mostly uncompetitive for three quarters. A Michigan team in Year 5 of the Jim Harbaugh era simply can’t lose a game in this fashion. Beating Wisconsin on the road isn’t easy – no Wolverines coach has done it since Lloyd Carr – but you can’t go down like this. So, what now?Panic, basically. Even the most-loyal of Harbaugh defenders seem to be backing off their stances now.“Michigan is a complete disaster. I was certain Harbaugh would be successful there. Same with Chip Kelly at UCLA. Thus far, and likely forever, wrong on both accounts,” Dan Wetzel tweeted.Under Jim Harbaugh, Michigan has never trailed at any point by 21 points in the first half of a game.Overall, Michigan is 0-26 when trailing by 21 points at any point in a game over the last 15 years. pic.twitter.com/jK70FpGMFk— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) September 21, 2019Michigan fans have predictably been melting down on message boards all afternoon. And, hey, it’s tough to blame them.Michigan fans are not having a good time today. pic.twitter.com/zyUpWHL2NV— Eleven Warriors (@11W) September 21, 2019“It’s almost like … and just hear me out … Jim Harbaugh is an average college coach and Shea Patterson isn’t a game-changer,” Barrett Sallee tweeted. Is it fair to wonder if Harbaugh was ever as good as advertised? Maybe, maybe not.But one thing is certain: the Wolverines just aren’t at a level people expected them to be when Harbaugh took over this program. And at this point, it’s fair to wonder if they’ll ever get there. With today’s loss, Harbaugh falls to 40-15 as Michigan’s head coach.Up next for the Wolverines: a home game against Rutgers. Then: home vs. No. 18 Iowa, at Illinois, at No. 13 Penn State, home vs. No. 7 Notre Dame.Harbaugh needs to rebound from this loss as well as possible, but it’s not going to get much easier.last_img read more
