Raja.It is being speculated that the reason for his absence is his ideological differences with Aparajitha which is talked about in the student circuit It goes against the tradition of JNU politics that a senior leader of a party goes missing at a crucial time like this Another reason doing the rounds is that Kanhaiya might be worried about losing his ‘star value’ if AISF happens to lose Shehla Rashid student activist who shot to fame after last year’s agitation is busy campaigning night and day for the Left unity and supporters are of the view that Kanhaiya’s active backing of Aparajitha would have strengthened her chances further Posters and wall art put up in JNU ahead of JNUSU elections Firstpost/ Pallavi Rebbapragada Firstpostasked Kanhaiya how much truth there is to such conjecture "JNU isn’t just a campus It represents a mindset that is pro-democracy and pro-constitution and speaks up for the atrocities faced by the marginalised communities Moreover the slogan ‘Shut down JNU’ is being used outside the campus That is why it is important to go into the masses and remind them about the equality and justice that JNU stands for" Kanhaiya said adding that he has been participating in non-political events like the Azadi Koonch a movement against the flogging of five Dalit men in Una; along with farmers and women’s movements around the country Dodging our questions about a possible internal discord he widened the discourse to a national level "Politics has become only about elections and arithmetic calculations but (it is) about taking our ideologies to the people in the right spirit When we failed to stop the ABVP from coming to power it was our failure of not being able to take our ideology to the people" Kanhaiya explained adding that there is an ideology at work behind the 83 percent seat cut in JNU and that interferes with the fact that education is a fundamental right "There’s a perception imposed on those who hold degrees from JNU and even after completing PhDs aren’t able to find jobs outside This is why it’s important to create awareness about a university which like other universities serves to dispel repressive thought processes with rational ones" he added justifying his absence from the political scene When we asked Aparajitha about Kanhaiya’s absenteeism she reasoned that "The All India Student Federation-All India Youth Federation has launched a national campaign called Save India-Change India to protest against the anti-people policies of the NDA Government at the Centre and Kanhaiya is anchoring that" Resentment with Lyngdoh Committee takes backseat Umar Khalid the student activist who was briefly arrested in February 2016 on charges of sedition was one of the founders of the Bhagat Singh Ambedkar Students Organisation (BASO) which isn’t contesting from the Central Panel but has fielded its councillor candidate Chepal Sherpa from School of Social Sciences Khalid never wanted to contest elections as he was a part of the now defunct Democratic Students Union (DSU) which doesn’t believe in Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendations calling it undemocratic and targeting representation of marginalised sections in the university "The committee’s report curbs student activism For instance one of the clauses states that if you contest once you cannot contest again This puts a pressure on organisations to factory-produce activists" Umar toldFirstpost Why the change in attitude we asked "JNU is at a critical juncture Najeeb is on the rolls of university. we don’t where he is However we do know that the goons who assaulted him and in a way are responsible for his disappearance are roaming free and in fact one of them is contesting the elections" he said The reason behind BASO’s entry into the political arena Sherpa spells out: "In the spirit of the slogan ‘Fight Back JNU’ a student union was elected with a huge mandate last year but it has been unable to resist the anti-student policies of the present administration If we are elected we’ll become a critical voice within the union and try to form an alternative left" To an outsider last year’s newsmakers Shehla Kanhaiya and Umar might seem like they belong to the same party and stand up for the same political ideals but the vibrancy of difference is what makes JNU what it is Dissent isn’t only against the state it’s against one another too and the right to assert that dissent without a disruption of peace is what JNU wants in these elections New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Mondayrefused to entertain a plea filed by Aam Aadmi not the creation of an anti-Indian Pakistani satellite state.diplomatically. That is because it is not a territorial issue In Indian eyesthe retention of a Muslim-majority Kashmir is necessary to preserve Indias character as a secular state in which 160 million Muslims coexist uneasily with a Hindu majority By the same tokenPakistan gives Kashmir top priority to vindicate its creation as an Islamic state To be suresignificant progress was made during former president Pervez Musharrafs regime in exploring the terms for a thaw in Kashmir But no proposal for a grand bargain would have any chance of success unless Islamabad prosecutes the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks constitutional democracythat law must be allowed to take its own courserang hollow when law was not taking any course That the dispute itself languishes in courtsdecades after it was originally institutedis itself testament to the limited power of the law in framing this dispute In the meantime every single political entity acquired an investment in keeping the dispute alive The Congress ran with the hare and hunted with the hound by allowing shilanyas on the site (read Narasimha Raos account of Buta Singhs conduct as home minister) Many secularist parties were less interested in finding a solution than in using the dispute to display their credentialsand many groups used the dispute to politically use minorities Ayodhyato borrow Emily Dickinsons phrasebecame the narcotic that nibbled away at Indias soul None of this context can detract from the central culpability of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar in the destruction of the mosque The destruction was a denouement of a movement that baited minorities and left death and destruction in its wake The only question was whether the Liberhan Commission could translate culpability into a forensically legal framework This remains to be seen On the face of it there is very little surprising in the revelations in relation to the BJP When it came to the BJP it was politically convenient for all of us to hold on to distinctions without a difference What did the distinction between saying the movement and the frenzy was planned but the destruction was not amount to Even Rao acknowledged that the BJP leaders were pleading with the kar sevaks to stop But that was like trying to stop an already fired bullet in mid air Even Vajpayees self-exonerationpersonal decency and expressions of regret were always compromised by the fact that his government did not give the slightest evidence of pursuing the perpetrators of this enormous crime The BJP tried to dissociate itself from the actwhile continuing to nurture the actors The surprise is not in the revelations The surprise is in our feigning surprise For if all this is truethe report actually indicts our democracy We were the ones trying to hold on to the ceremonies of innocenceso that we could allow a space where Hindutva was politically acceptablebut no one had to own up to its consequences But this will also make it difficult to read the report as anything but a political document For one thingphrases like could have will remain a question of political judgmentnot legal settlement What was exactly the point at which the Indian state opened the doors to the destruction of the mosque Shall we stretch that inquiry back to Rajiv Gandhis tenure Narasimha Rao argued that he did not have enough of a legal basis to invoke Article 356 But he also hinted that the real reason was that it was a matter of political judgment whether invoking it would not have had the effect of galvanising Hindutva forces even further How do we judge a claim like that There can be very little doubt of the Kalyan Singh governments widespread complicity in the final outcome But would it have been easy for any political leader to order firing on that mob at a very late stage In hindsightwe can even speculate whether India in the long run was saved from Hindutva because the Babri Masjid could not be converted into a site of martyrdom; instead it remained a sordid political crime The exoneration of Raos role will credibly invite charges of partisanship The commission seems to have taken Raos own self-exoneration at face value Finallythe list of people indicted is long From some of the accounts it is clear that the movement had widespread support amongst state functionaries But in a sense the enlarged list of indictments will also contribute to the sense that this was a genuinely widespread social movementnot simply a conspiracy of the few If we are honest we have to acknowledge that just as many of the core participants may have felt a tinge of regretthere were also tens of thousands of others whowhile not condoning the actnevertheless felt a momentary catharsis when the Babri Masjid was destroyed In a way the success of the Liberhan report will not be measured in narrowly legal terms The state must carry out what its legal obligations arealthough these are likely to be another endless grind But it will have to do so in a way that carries the undisputed imprimatur of credibility And while it is a minor issuethe leak does not speak well of the state Given how selectively commission reports have been followedthis will be hard to achieve It will also not escape peoples notice that if the law works in this caseit will do so only when the relevant are on the political back foot The delay in the report means that laws triumphif it doeswill still carry the odour of politics The second challenge is managing the politics India hasas many have observedmoved beyond Hindutva But it has done so in the peculiar Indian waywhich is not by the creation of a first principles based normative and legal consensus It has done so simply by rejecting a politics of extreme polarisation We moved on by wishing the issue awaynot by resolving it And it is also a little bit of a mistake to confuse the cultural receptivity of Hindutva with its electoral fortunes In some waysthe report will keep the cultural politics of Hindutva alive The BJP needs reinvention But there is no doubt that the BJP will have to close ranks on this issue In some ways it will make the partys move beyond Hindutva more complicated It cannot jettison the indicted without inviting the charge of betrayal or cowardice The Ayodhya disaster was facilitated by a play of ambivalencesexploited by determined groups in the Sangh Parivar But this report will unleash two conversations Onea publiclegal and political conversation This will be partisan and acrimoniousdivisivepredictableand given the current arraignment of political forcesnot hugely consequential But there will also be the internal onenot explicitly articulatedwhich will once again force us to confront all those silencesambiguitieswishes and evasions that made Ayodhya such a symbol of our
