Jamaica end Rio Olympic Games with 11 medals

first_imgRIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AFP) — Usain Bolt insisted it was “mission accomplished” after signing off with a ‘treble-treble’ in his final Olympic race, predicting that his achievements may never be broken. The world’s fastest man anchored Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team to gold on a balmy Rio night on Friday to capture the 100m, 200m and relay titles for a third-straight Games.“I hope I’ve set the bar high enough that no one can do it again,” said sprint king Bolt, a ninth Olympic gold medal safely in the bank.“It’s a great feeling — I’ve worked so hard every Olympics to win three gold medals and I’m just so happy I’ve accomplished so much,” he added, admitting his Olympic farewell was tinged with a little sadness.“I knew it was going to be done and I’m definitely going to miss the crowd and the energy, and I’m going to miss the competition.“I just have mixed feelings now, but it’s been a great career. I’ll have to make a new bucket list now, I’ve achieved all I wanted to in track and field.”Bolt, who has said he will retire after next year’s World Championships in London, brought Jamaica home in 37.27 seconds ahead of surprise silver medallists Japan and Canada — promoted to third after the United States were disqualified. He also made it a perfect nine wins out of nine Olympic finals he has contested, but confessed to feeling nervous before Nickel Ashmeade brought him the baton.“I was just watching them and praying they didn’t mess up,” said Bolt, who turns 30 when the Rio Games close today.“As soon as I got the baton, I knew I was going to win this one. There’s no one on the anchor leg going to outrun me. I told the guys: ‘Don’t give me too much work to do!’Yohan Blake summed up his history-making teammate by saying: “Nine medals make Usain immortal. He’s more than the greatest.”Bolt has now won an astonishing 20 Olympic and world titles.Bolt insisted all of his gold medals were special.“They all mean the world to me,” he said. “It’s nine — all of them are special and they all came along at the right time.”Bolt added: “I’ve proven to the world I’m the greatest, so it’s mission accomplished, pretty much!”last_img read more

March Madness 2019: 3 takeaways from Indiana’s bubble-bursting loss to Ohio State

first_imgBoth teams entered the matchup on the bubble and the Buckeyes (19-13) increased their chances of reaching the field of 68 with the victory. Meanwhile, Indiana (17-15) is now unlikely to hear its name called on Selection Sunday. Here are three takeaways from the Hoosiers’ loss: Related News Indiana: Jekyll and HydeIndiana’s play this season has made little sense and that did not change against Ohio State. The Hoosiers fell behind by as many as 22 midway through the second half yet launched a furious rally to cut their deficit to just two with less than five seconds to play. But the comeback came up short as Ohio State answered with a pair of free throws to secure the victory. The Hoosiers have arguably the best wins of any team fighting for an at-large bid and also some of the worst losses. They topped Marquette and Louisville in nonconference play before adding two victories against Michigan State and one over Wisconsin in Big Ten action. Indiana, however, also dropped games to Arkansas, Nebraska, Northwestern and Rutgers.  Indiana had been on a four-game winning streak before it fell to Ohio State. It was the Hoosiers’ second loss to the Buckeyes this season.Romeo Langford did not deliver for IndianaRomeo Langford is Indiana’s best player, but he did not play like it Thursday.Langford was not aggressive looking for his shot and disappeared for long stretches of the game. He finished with nine points on 4-of-12 shooting, six rebounds and five assists. The star freshman, who entered the game averaging 16.7 points and 5.4 rebounds, also turned the ball over twice and missed four of his five 3-pointers.Block. They averaged 56 points per game in those losses and shot just 32.5 percent from the field. Ohio State, however, looked like a completely different team with Wesson on the floor. The Buckeyes’ top scorer and rebounder struggled from the field (5 of 15) but created easy opportunities around the rim. His presence in the post also opened up driving lanes and uncontested jumpers for his teammates.Wesson tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.
