Panathinaikos Coach Fired After Loss

first_imgATHENS – Panathinaikos basketball coach Argyris Pedoulakis was sacked on March 8, the day after the Greens lost to lowly Laboral Kutxa in an important Eurloeague match.Club President Dimitris Giannakopoulos was reportedly upset that Pedoulakis was relying on a defense-oriented style and that the 68-61 home loss meant the team’s chance of finishing in the top two of its grouping and making the Euroleague quarter-finals was now very slim.Pedoulakis had led Panathinaikos to a big win over its arch-rival Olympiakos and in the last 18 months won two Greek Cups and one Greek league title and is leading the league again this year.Team manager Frangiskos Alvertis is taking over at the club. It was reported that the favorite for the post is Fotis Katsikaris. The Greens were undone by a disastrous third period when the Spanish team outscored the Greek team 27-17 as Panathinaikos showed the effects of playing without injured American star Ramel Curry and hitting only 20 percent of its three-point shots.Laboral led 28-27 at half-time and ran away in the third period and built a 15-point lead, 61-46, early in the last quarter, staving off the home team the rest of the way.It was only when Laboral forward Tibor Pleiss fouled out five minutes from the end that Panathinaikos got close, playing tough under the basket to close within 65-61.Dimitris Diamantidis led the scoring for the Greens with 15 points, while Zach Wright got 12. This was the fifth defeat in nine matches for Panathinaikos in the group, leaving it little chance of finishing in the top two.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more
